Curtis will be in conversation with Teresa Kittler, an editor at Sculpture Journal and lecturer at the University of York, discussing the many ideas and individuals encompassed in Curtis’ study of the entwined histories of post-war sculpture and architecture – from concrete to casting, Anni Albers to Marcel Breuer.

In The Pliable Plane, Penelope Curtis traces the ways sculpture infiltrated architecture over the post-war period, identifying the wall as a particular locus of intersection. Studying a series of diverse examples including bomb shelters, caves, war memorials, and public buildings, Curtis considers overlooked spaces and surfaces of coalescence in place of familiar pairings or dichotomies. This lucid history encompasses the wartime development of materials such as concrete, the discovery of the Lascaux Caves, the rise of relief art, and figures including Henry Moore, Anni Albers, Jorge Oteiza, Costantino Nivola, and Jacques Tati.
